Things that give me hope as we travel:
- Kendrick Lamar (Finn’s contribution obvs) He has been educating us on the music of the last 25 years, and I’m enjoying his in-depth analysis of the motifs and symbolism in rap. We also had to go killjoy on him and point out if he can draw parallels between Tyler the Creator’s use of a gun/phallic symbol in his music, he should kick ass in English Lit in HS.
- We’ve been across almost the whole country now and I’ve not seen a single one of those stupid-ass red hats. Not one! We did, however, drive past this sign for a manure store in rural TN:

- Dave and I loved the fact that the Grand Canyon was teeming with speakers of world languages. As we walked by one group, I said “Tout le monde ici vient de France” and we struck up a lovely conversation with a Swiss family. They both spoke amazing English, but they also let me babble in broken French to them and it was really encouraging.
- We haven’t seen any evidence of ICE storm troopers, but we have rural CA ahead of us and I have my ICE blocker app downloaded and ready to use.
- Today is the national protest day in honor of John Lewis and his lifetime mission of making “good trouble.” We’ve participated in a lot of protest this year, but I’m not sure if we’ll find anything today that we can join. I mean, Antifa has paid me good money to show up and I need to earn my pay.
- I think we’ve made a very subtle shift in family dynamics. Suddenly, or maybe so slowly that I didn’t notice, Finn is “parenting” us more than we are “babying” him. He’s loading and unloading luggage, running errands for us, and generally moving into a co-adult role in the family rather than a kid role. I love it and I’m desperately melancholy at the same time.
